KorraSami is canon.
Now, if you are not a fan of The Last Airbender Series, then, you probably won't get why it is so important for me to write about, or even why I'd care about a cartoon, but I got plenty of inspiration from this show and Korra took my love for the show to an entirely new level.
I'm not just talking about Korra and Asami, which I was definitely a shipper for. I saw the hints and I hoped and hoped that I was really seeing what I thought I was seeing. And yes, how awesome is it that two incredibly powerful individuals ended up falling in love and starting on a new journey together. It makes it even more awesome that they were women.
Now, there are plenty of things that I loved about LoK and I'm going to name a few. I'm really sad to see the show go away, but it left a legacy that I hope many cartoons begin to follow.
Korra is a person of color- as the main character of a show, visibility is extremely important. Korra's darker skin and those deep blue eyes added to her character in such an amazing way.
Korra's body type was that of an athlete- Her arms! That may say it all, but too often female characters are overly curvy and sexualized, but not Korra. She looked like a person that was a master of all the elements, someone that trained on a daily basis. I loved it.
Asami is a genius- Not only is Asami rich, beautiful, and friendly, she's an engineer. As a woman, this is awesome. Society tells us time and again that as women get older, they steer away from the math, science, and engineering. There is a trend that is bringing some of them back, but you don't see women too often running companies, building vehicles, and being proficient at martial arts. Asami is everything!
The show hit on many themes that cartoons shy away from- betrayal of a parent, cheating and more cheating, post traumatic stress disorder, and more. These were children going through this. Team Avatar was young adults dealing with young adult problems. They didn't shy away from them either.
Mako didn't get the girl- I liked Mako. He had plenty of faults, but redeemed himself at the end. I'm just glad that they didn't decide to put him with Korra or Asami just because he was the most handsome character in the show. He realized that his duty was to protect those that he cared about and he didn't need to be in a relationship to do that.
The brother bond was beautiful- Bolin is probably the most lovable character ever. He's just genuine in a way that is still believable because he too makes mistakes. What has always shined through was the bond he had with Mako. They love each other unconditionally, aren't afraid to say it, and will forever have each other's backs. Bolin believed in family. Even those he had just met.
The creators didn't take the old team avatar bait- This show could have turned out so much differently if they had decided to show more scenes with Toph and Katara. They could have done background on Sokka. They didn't take the bait. We all wanted to know what really happened in those years, but it would have been a different story and would have done a disservice to Korra and her journey.
The fight scenes- Suyin vs. Kuvira was probably my favorite just because Su bended amour onto herself during the fight. It was short, but it showed the depth of skill between the two fighters. Each battle was amazing and beautifully drawn. Much kudos to those that researched fighting styles and techniques and created it for us to see!
Like I said, LoK is amazing. KorraSami is canon and I'm a happy camper.
